Alok Mishra from Emory University in Atlanta has shown that curcumin can suppress the growthand cancer effects of the human papillomavirus (HPV) .
In addition to the anti-cancer and antiviral properties, the research has claimed turmeric to be an excellent source of oral health.
“Since HPV-related oral cancer cases are on the rise, we tested the same hypothesis on oral cancer,’ Mishra claimed they were ‘Very interesting findings’
The effects of curcumin on supression of HPV were first noted by Mishra and his team in 2005. His work suggests that curcumin helps down-regulate the levels of AP-1 and NF-kB, two cellular transcription factors. This helps turn off the expression of the virus in the infected cervical and oral cells.
